Privacy Policy for BenchProof Chrome Extension

Last Updated: January 13, 2026

Overview

BenchProof - Baker's Percentage Calculator ("the Extension") is a browser extension that helps bakers convert recipes to baker's percentages. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

Information We Collect

Recipe Data

When you use the Extension to analyze a recipe page, we collect:

  • Recipe ingredients and their quantities
  • Recipe instructions (optional)
  • The URL of the recipe page you are viewing

This data is processed locally in your browser to calculate baker's percentages. Recipe data is only sent to our servers when you explicitly choose to save a recipe to your BenchProof account.

Authentication Data

When you sign in to the Extension, we store:

  • An authentication token (to keep you signed in)
  • A refresh token (to maintain your session)
  • Your user ID and email address

This data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's secure storage API and is never synced across devices.

What We Don't Collect

The Extension does NOT collect:

  • Your browsing history or activity on other websites
  • Analytics or usage tracking data
  • Personal information beyond what you provide during sign-in
  • Data from pages that don't contain recipes
  • Cookies or tracking identifiers

Recipe data is only read when you click the BenchProof button on a page. The Extension does not automatically scan or transmit data from websites you visit.

How We Use Your Information

  • Recipe Analysis: To calculate baker's percentages and display them in the Extension
  • Recipe Saving: To save recipes to your BenchProof account when you choose to do so
  • Authentication: To verify your identity and provide access to your saved recipes

Data Storage and Security

  • Local Storage: Authentication tokens are stored securely in Chrome's local storage (not synced across devices)
  • Server Communication: All data transmitted to our servers uses HTTPS encryption
  • No Third Parties: We do not sell, share, or transfer your personal data to third parties

Permissions Explained

The Extension requests the following permissions:

  • storage: To save your authentication state and preferences locally
  • activeTab: To read recipe content from the current tab when you activate the Extension
  • alarms: To periodically refresh your authentication token
  • scripting: To enable the "Scan This Page" feature for sites not in our whitelist
  • Host permission (benchproof.app): To communicate with our API for saving recipes and authentication

Supported Recipe Sites

The Extension automatically detects recipes on 225+ curated recipe websites. We use a whitelist approach rather than requesting access to all websites, which means:

  • The Extension only runs on trusted recipe sites we've verified
  • Your browsing on other websites is never accessed
  • No data is collected from non-recipe sites

For sites not on our whitelist, you can use the "Scan This Page" feature to manually check any page for recipe content.

  • Delete: Remove saved recipes from your account
  • Portability: Export your recipes as CSV or PDF
  • Opt-out: Sign out at any time to remove stored authentication data
